Inside Cadenhead's

What Is an Independent Bottler?

The Distillery Makes the Spirit.
We Decide When It's Ready.

At Cadenhead’s, we believe that it’s what is inside the bottle that counts and while that will always be true, there is a detailed and complex system in place that gets us to that point and, ultimately, defines what an Independent Bottler truly is.

An Independent Bottler like Cadenhead’s purchases whisky (as well as rum, gin and more) and releases it under their own brand. Which sounds simple… but we take pride in doing so much more than that.

MATURED IN CAMPBELTOWN

Hand-Picked Casks.
Matured in Our Own Warehouses.

We own a large number of casks and we are always buying more so we have a wide variety to choose from for bottling now and also to lay down for future releases. The selection of casks, in addition to being a fun part of the job, is key for us to select high quality whisky with a varied range of ages, cask types and distillery styles.

We don’t get distracted by things like the age of the whisky or whether it was distilled at a fashionable distillery. We bottle what we want, when we want and we make the decision based on taste because we care most about the quality of the dram. The entire Cadenhead’s team is involved along the way – during purchasing, reracking, vatting, sampling or any of the many other steps taken to get a Cadenhead’s bottle on the shelves.

CURATED BY CADENHEAD'S

We Believe in Quality,
Not Quantity.

Since we are the oldest Independent Bottler in Scotland (you can read about our history here INSERT LINK TO HISTORY PAGE), we have an even greater incentive than most to ensure we maintain high standards when selecting our spirits since we have our distinguished history and tradition to live up to.

We monitor the quality of the whisky and may choose to transfer it to another cask to alter the whisky’s flavour profile or we could select it for blending if we think it works best when combined with another whisky we own. Storing our casks in our own warehouses in Campbeltown gives us the luxury of time, and complete control over every stage of the maturation process. We will only bottle a cask when we feel it is ready, and believe it has reached its full potential.

Although it is very easy for us to bottle an attractive whisky from a big name distillery we also take pride in finding hidden gems from perhaps lesser known distilleries and these decisions take patience, knowledge and a lot of hard work.

Our process

Cadenhead's
'By Test The Best'

1

Source and evaluate casks

We work closely with distilleries, brokers and private sellers to find casks worth having. Each one is judged on the distillery, the age of the spirit, the fill date and its provenance before we commit.

2

Acquire and warehouse

Once a cask has been purchased, we move it into our own bonded warehouses in Campbeltown. We keep careful records of every cask’s type, fill level and location, so it can be traced throughout maturation.

3

Monitor and taste

We sample our casks regularly to follow how the spirit is developing. Our team assess colour, nose, palate and finish, and note how the wood and the spirit are working together. It may be decided to re-rack a cask at this point.

4

Select and bottle

When a cask reaches its peak, we make the call to bottle it. It is bottled without chill-filtering or added colour, and our single casks at natural cask strength, so the cask speaks for itself.

Why WE matter

Every Bottle Is Unrepeatable.

Independent Bottlers give consumers experiences they might not get anywhere else. Some distilleries don’t release single malts, for example, so we can give you the opportunity to try something new, rare and different. Also, there are examples of distilleries who do release their own single malts but only using certain cask types or at specific, limited, age ranges – Independent Bottlers can break the mold and allow you to try your old favourites with a new twist.

Independent Bottlers like Cadenhead’s are vital for providing additional variety and creativity to our industry – meaning that there is always something out there for everyone.

Questions

Independent Bottling: Your Questions Answered

Some distilleries sell casks on the condition that their name is not used on the label. If the whisky is too good to pass up, we bottle it anyway, with everything we are allowed to tell you: strength, cask type, region and our tasting notes. Those bottlings go into our Enigma range, along with whiskies the rules will not let us describe the obvious way.

Cask strength whisky is bottled at the strength it comes out of the cask, without being diluted with water. It is usually well above 46% ABV and often above 50%. Add a few drops of water in the glass if you want to open it up.

Chill-filtering cools whisky and passes it through a fine filter to remove natural compounds that can make it turn cloudy when it is cold or when water is added. It gives a clear, stable look, but many drinkers feel it takes away texture and flavour. We leave our whisky unchill-filtered, so a slight haze with water or ice is a good sign, not a fault.

Wm Cadenhead, founded in Aberdeen in 1842, is Scotland’s oldest independent bottler. Today we are based in Campbeltown, with shops in Campbeltown, Edinburgh and London.
